Apple has done something smart. While they drummed up the hype for the iPhone launch in the biggest marketing success of the decade, they also made it easy for their customers to activate their new iPhone. After waiting in those long lines, you didn’t have to wait at the store to activate your phone by a customer service representative but just take it home to activate it via iTunes.
Requirements to activate your iPhone: 
- Internet connection (bear with me.. it gets better)
- iTunes store account or a major credit card
- a valid Social Security Number (needed by AT&T for the credit check)
- Latest version of iTunes (7.3 at the time of writing this)
- Mac OS? X v10.4.10 or later; Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later; or Windows Vista Home Premium, Business, Enterprise or Ultimate Edition
- A 2 year Service Plan with AT&T. Existing customers can keep their phone number if they opt to.
