You have probably heard of the paid iPhone app, RedLaser, that has been in the top 10 paid apps list for a while.
But, there is an app that could be called the original barcode scanner for mobile phones that was very popular with Android – ShopSavvy.
ShopSavvy lets you point the red laser like line on a barcode. It uses the iPhone’s camera to scan the bar code and look up the product online. It shows a picture of the product and shows their online prices.
Plus, it uses your location via GPS to show the local stores that carry the product with their prices.
Now, you have a powerful product scanner while you are out shopping to instantly see if you are paying the right price. A deal hunter’s dream weapon.
ShopSavvy lets you save products you look up so you can refer to them later. It also has another cool feature – setup Price Alert.
I tried scanning a book I had near me and it instantly popped up in ShopSavvy as you can see in the screenshots.

Absolutely amazing. The barcode looks so blurry on screen but redlaser can still read it. I have been able to find 100+ movies from my DVD collection so far. Then I email them to myself and I am given an attachment of raw barcodes (and text in the body of the email with the barcodes plus the name of the DVD). I am having a little trouble importing these into collectorz.com’s Movie Collector but I think it is on their part and not redlaser’s. When using the import feature it places the barcode in the title column and leave the barcode column blank.
Amazing app … in some cases it works faster than the scanner at your grocery.
