Apple iPhone – News, Tips, Apps, Accesories, Reviews for you

Apple has restricted us iPhone users to just iTunes AppStore. But, thanks to DevTeam, you can jailbreak a iPhone to enjoy other apps that are out there in the wild.

I jailbroke my iphone 3G last week and its working great. First I was not sure how its gonna work and I was a little  hesitant to jailbreak the iphone. But after I did it I was surprised at actually how simple it was to do it and to see some awesome apps from Cydia that weren’t available in AppStore.

Things to remember

  • You have to update your iPhone to firmware 2.0.2 using iTunes before jailbreaking using Quickpwn (windows only). It doesn’t do the firmware upgrade and that’s why it’s so quick.
  • Follow the instructions without missing a step.

Here are the simple steps I followed :

  • Download QickPwnGUI from here and save it in new folder called quickpwn somewhere in your computer.
  • 2008-08-25_161149

  • If its a zip file extract all the files in that QuickPwn folder.
  • 2008-08-25_161309

  • Make sure your iphone is connected to your computer via USB cable and make sure iTunes detects it.
  • The itunes and all other applications related to iTunes and apple software should be closed before starting this procedure. (of course after you can see your connected iPhone in iTunes)
  • You can make sure of it by double checking the task manager.
  • Now in that QuickPwn folder you can see a executable file QuickPwnGui120.exe
  • Double click this file you can see this window and ask to choose your type whether iphone3g/iphone/ipodtouch.
  • 2008-08-25_161330

  • When you select your version of iphone /ipodtouch click the blue button below .
  • 2008-08-25_161342

  • After that you will see a new popup window and you will be asked to browse and select your iphone firmware version. If you are using Windows Vista, you can find your firmware in /<user-name>/Appdata/Roaming/Apple software/iTunes/iphone software updates/ or
you can just download the firmware for:
    iphone 1st gen users : iPhone 2.0.2 (5C1) firmware for 2G
    iPhone 3G users     : iPhone 2.0.2 (5C1) firmware  for 3G
ipodtouch users : iPhone 2.0.2 (5C1) firmware for iPod
and save it in the quickpwn folder.
  • Now browse and select the firmware and if its right it will show green check mark and click the blue button below it will take you to next step.
  • 2008-08-25_161406

  • Now you will see a window like this and select all three cydia, installer, Replace Boot logos and click the blue button below.
  • 2008-08-25_161420

  • And the final step before launching the quickpwn command line application click the go button in this window.
  • 2008-08-25_161430

  • Now, the command line will launch and please make every effort to follow the instructions word by word. It gives you visual indication of the time so you can follow it easily.
  • It pretty much boils down to
    1. turn off your iPhone and confirm
    2. when the cmdline installer counts down to 5
    3. hold the power button for 5 secs
    4. without taking your finger off the Power button, hold the Home button for 10 secs
    5. at the end of 10 secs, release just the Power button without letting go off the Home button.
    6. now, hold the Home button for 30-60 secs until the tool jailbreaks your iPhone
    7. You’ll see a message in the cmdline that your iPhone is jailbroken or start seeing a spinning wheel on your iPhone and you can release the Home button.
  • In about 10-15 mins of this process, you will have a jailbroken iPhone. Enjoy!

If you are wary of the timing, you can take a look at the screenshots of these steps over at iClarified. There are a bunch of YouTube videos floating around as well.

The best thing about this process is that you don’t lose any of your contacts, application data or anything! Thank you DevTeam!

    well

after “ready to restore custom IPSW” showed up I opened iTunes and clicked RESTORE, but it went to download the update from the website instead of using the custom ipsw…

    help !

bicao, I think you misread one of the steps. Once iTunes detects that your iPhone is connected to your computer, you have to shutdown iTunes. At no time, during the jailbreaking process you need iTunes. Quickpwn will do the whole thing for you. Please follow all the steps word by word. Good luck this time.

  3. [...] of the best thing I love about jailbreaking my iPhone with Quickpwn is the ability to theme my iPhone the way I want. There are plenty of free themes available via [...]

  5. shriya says:

Hi Jen Quickpwn for 2.1 has been released and I should be posting detailed instructions with pictures in this blog soon. I have been away on vacation for the last few days and trying to catch up.

About safety, I had jailbroken my 3g phone and used it with the last firmware and everything worked great. As long as you backup your iPhone through iTunes before trying this, you can reset to it to how it was before, should things go wrong.

I’ve heard of people encountering problems when the said person attempts to jailbreak the iPhone or iPod touch that they own. Here are a few questions I have:
    1) Is it legal?
    2)Is it safe?
    a) how do you back up your device via iTunes if anything goes wrong?
    b) How do you restore your device if something goes wrong?
    3) Is it worth it?
4)Can I change it back to an un-jailbroken state if I decide I like it the way it is?

    Thanks so much.
