Change Your iPhone Firmware Without Upgrading

Posted by karthik On October - 12 - 2009

This one is for all you jailbreakers. I am sure you are showing off your blackr4in jailbroken iPhone 3.1.2 to your friends.

Here is another jailbreak break app worth checking out – FWChanger.

With jailbreaking, we can’t update to the current iPhone OS though iTunes as soon it is released. While we wait for jailbreak like sn0wbreeze for 3.1.2, there are apps that require you to be on current iPhone OS to install.

What if you could change your firmware version to trick the app into thinking you are on the current firmware?

FWChanger does just that.

All you have to do is load up FWChanger and set the iPhone OS and build number and set custom firmware.

You can tap the check firmware button to see your current firmware and build.

Word of caution: FWChanger does not upgrade/downgrade your firmware. It just tricks apps into thinking that you are on a certain firmware so you can install it.

Update: Changing my firmware from 3.0.1 to 3.1 did let me download apps that needed 3.1. But, some apps that were working fine like Camera Genius stopped working. I had to reset to original firmware and reboot my iPhone to fix that.

I tried downloading Dropbox & Camera Plus – both required iPhone OS 3.1+ and I am on 3.0. Although I was able to download the apps they didn’t work. So, this might be ideal for those apps that actually don’t need the new OS functinality but have the requirement.

Let me know if you got this to work for any app that you couldn’t install before.
