iPhone 3G Unlock - UltraSn0w is Available Now!

Posted by karthik On June - 23 - 2009

pwnappleDev Team released their iPhone OS 3.0 jailbreak software this past weekend for both Windows and Mac.

RedSn0w or QuickPwn for so easy to use, we had our iPhone 3G jailbroken within minutes. But, we weren’t able to unlock it as redsn0w only supported unlocking the original iPhone.

UltraSn0w is capable of unlocking iPhone 3G and make it work on any carrier. Here’s how you’d do it

  • Upgrade and jailbreak your iPhone OS 3.0 with RedSn0w or PwnageTool
  • Run Cydia or Icy
  • Add the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com to Cydia or Icy. Note that ultrasn0w has a number 0 in the name.
  • Search for ultrasn0w in cydia and install it
  • Reboot your iPhone 3G
  • Voila!

Dev Team notes that T-Mobile USA users should disable 3G before using ultrasn0w. If you have already used, share your experience with ultrasn0w here in comments or on Twitter with us.

How to Jailbreak & Unlock iPhone OS 3.0 in Windows?

Posted by karthik On June - 20 - 2009

Dev Team has come through again and have released their jailbreak and unlocking (iPhone 2G)  tool for Windows hot on the heels of OS 3.0 PwnageTool for Mac.

The RedSn0w released works on Windows and Mac OS. Redsn0w works just like QuickPwn for Windows and version 0.7.1 has just been released with a bug fix for Windows.

An important thing to note is that, pwnapple

Redsn0w can jailbreak

  • iPhone 2G
  • iPhone 3G
  • iPod Touch (original) and iPod Touch 2G

Redsn0w cannot jailbreak

  • iPhone 3GS

Redsn0w can unlock

  • iPhone 2G (both unlocked and original)

Redsnow cannot unlock

  • iPhone 3G
  • iPhone 3G S

If you have a iPhone 3G and rely on unlocking for getting cellular service, you have to wait until Ultrasn0w is released sometime soon via Cydia.

Before you attempt the jailbreak, I strongly recommend reading and re-reading instructions by Dev Team. Also, make a backup of your iPhone via iTunes before you get started.

How to Unlock iPhone OS 3.0 with Redsn0w?

Here are the steps you need to follow word by word. Again check if your device is supported with this version of  Redsn0w.

  1. Create a folder in your desktop named Quickpwn
    1. Download RedSn0w and place it in the Quickpwn folder
    2. Extract the RedSn0w.zip into the Quickpwn folder
    3. Download the relevant OS 3.0 firmware
      3.0 (2G):  iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw
      3.0 (3G): iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw
  2. Connect your iPhone to iTunes and select your iPhone.
  3. Hold the Shift button and click on Restore
  4. Now, select the ipsw file from the Quickpwn folder and hit the Open button
  5. Once iTunes has finished updating to the new 3.0 firmware, launch the redsn0w.exe file from your Quickpwn folder.
  6. Click Browse and select the firmware ipsw file in Quickpwn folder
  7. Once the firmware has been successfully verified by redSn0w, click Next
  8. Select Install Cydia in this screen and click Next
  9. Now plug your iPhone into the computer and make sure its turned OFF before clicking Next
  10. You will be guided by RedSn0w through the DFU mode - its not hard. Just follow the instructions on the screen as follows
    • Hold down the Power button for 2 seconds
    • Without releasing the Power button, hold down the Home button for 6 seconds
    • Without releasing the Home button, release the Power button. Continue holding the Home button for 29 seconds
  11. Your iPhone will now reboot
  12. RedSn0w will begin uploading the new RAMDISK to your iPhone
  13. Once RedSn0w tells you it’s done, click on Finish.
  14. Wait till your iPhone reboots again (5 mins) and you will see Cydia app in your Springboard.

Now enjoy your jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch and have fun with stuff like iPhone Winterboard themes!

We will be updaying this post with screenshots for illustration soon. So, please check back if you need further help with that.

PwnageTool Download for iPhone OS 3.0 Jailbreaking

Posted by karthik On June - 19 - 2009

Dev Team has come through again and PwnageTool for iPhone OS 3.0 has been released.

Remember, this is for Mac OS X only. PC users will have to wait a bit longer as always.

DO NOT use PwnageTool of you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w unlock and rely on unlocking to get cellular service!

Here is the Dev Team complete post and here are the most important points you should know before attempting to jailbreak your iPhone with the relevant parts highlighted (by me)

  • GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w and rely on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should NOT use PwnageTool right now. UltraSn0w is not included with this release and therefore your baseband will be locked and unable to use an operator other than the official one it was bought for. UltraSn0w will be release via APT (cydia and icy) soon. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.0 unlock works with this PwnageTool release.
  • Yellowsn0w in its current form will NOT work with the baseband version that is present in the 3.0 update, you will need Ultrasn0w, which will be released sometime soon, Ultrasn0w will work with all iPhone 3G models (but not 3GS), even ones that were previously unlockable, Ultrasn0w (when available) will be released via APT (this means you can get it via Cydia or Icy).
  • Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
  • Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
  • At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the 3.0 capable version of PwnageTool.
  • This app is suitable for the recent 3.0 release.
  • PwnageTool will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.
  • PwnageTool WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch (1st Generation) and the iPhone 3G.

Official PwnageTool 3.0 Download (bittorrent link)

iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G (with yellowsn0w) unlock as well as PC users will have to wait until DevTeam posts further developments. Stay tuned here or on Twitter and we will bring you updates as we get them.

Dev Team Warns Against iPhone 3.0 Beta Jailbreak

Posted by karthik On May - 8 - 2009

Dev Team has reinforced that they were able to jailbreak the 5th beat of iPhone 3.0 firmware. And they are pretty confident that the jailbreak will work in the final release of the iPhone 3.0 OS to be released in Apple’s WWDC event in June.

Here is what they said about the iPhone 3.0 jailbreak

As we’ve said in previous posts, nothing other than a hardware respin can prevent our jailbreak from working on all exisiting iPhone and iPod Touches.  They’ve chased our jailbreak so far down in the chain of trust, the only way they can fix it is in hardware.

In fact, I am impatiently waiting to get my hands on the rumoured new iPhone as well. Expect us to come back here in TiR with a vengeance. A site re-design is also in the making!

If you are thinking of trying out one of those hijacked versions of PwnageTool or Quickpwn for any of the beta releases of iPhone 3.0, Dev Team advises you to hold your horses.

If you care about the yellowsn0w unlock, don’t go anywhere near the beta releases. You will lose your unlock, possibly forever.

A lot of people I know who tried have reverted back to iPhone 2.x as most of the jailbreak apps and winterboard themes don’t work there anyways.

Clippy Brings Copy/Paste to iPhone [jailbreak app]

Posted by karthik On January - 22 - 2009

Apple doesn’t seem to care that we really could use the copy/paste functionality in iPhone. But, that’s why we love the jailbreaking community.

Clippy is a jailbreak app available via Cydia in your iPhone. Clippy brings copy/paste in most apps where the keyboard is available. Eg. Mail, Notes, SMS, Maps etc but not in Safari.

With Clippy installed, you just open the keyboard and hit the ‘.?123′ button to see ‘Copy’ and ‘Paste’ buttons at the top of the keyboard. Now just use your finger to select a region and press Copy. You get visual confirmation that the text actually copied by seeing the first few letters near the ‘Paste’ button.

Clippy Copy/paste

Now, just head on over to the app ou want the text to be copied to, hit the 123 button again and press ‘Paste’.

Are you wondering why you would need this? Imagine if you have a long address in your email and you want to map it. Unless you have an excellent memory, Clippy makes it ludicrously easy to just copy the address and plug it into Maps app!

It would be great to have this in Safari as well but this is a great start. MagicPad was another app that promised copy paste in iPhone.

I know some of us are nervous about jailbreaking, but reasons such as this available only via Cydia it might be worthwhile to jailbreak your iPhone 3g.

How to Jailbreak 2.2 & Unlock iPhone 3G?

Posted by shriya On January - 2 - 2009

The much awaited iPhone 3g unlock solution has arrived! A big hi-five to the Dev Team for releasing yellowsn0w on New Year’s eve.

One great news about this iPhone 3g unlock solution - yellowsn0w is that it works on iPhone firmware 2.2’s new baseband. We did pass on the earlier warning that this might not work but Dev Team got it to work on 2.2’s baseband (02.28.0.0) as well.

We successfully unlocked our iPhone 3g yesterday and here’s how we did it. I’ll add some screenshots to this post as soon as I get a chance.

Ingredients

  • iTunes 8
  • iPhone firmware 2.2
  • QuickPwn 2.2
  • Jailbroken iPhone 3G

Quick iPhone 3G Jailbreak & Unlock Recipe

Please note that this is what worked for us and it might be a little different for you. I am making this a quick recipe as this is very similar to the steps we followed for quickpwn 2.1 jailbreak.

Jailbreak iPhone 2.2

Skip to next section if you have already updated to 2.2 and jailbroken your iPhone 3G with QuickPwn 2.2 or PwnageTool. If you have updated 2.2 via iTunes but not jailbroken yet, start with step 5.

  1. Undo hidden apps via BossPrefs
  2. Uninstalled Categories (this proved to be a problem when we updated to 2.1 and may not be needed with this update)
  3. Backed up everything via iTunes (consider using AptBackup Cydia app to backup your app settings)
  4. Used iTunes to update to 2.2
  5. Downloaded Quickpwn 2.2 and launched it
  6. Follow the instructions in QuickPwn
  7. Once the iPhone is in recover mode (DFU mode)
    • hold your home button for 5 seconds
    • hold down the home and power button for 10 seconds
    • release the power button and continue to hold the home button to see the jailbreak progress and then let go of the home button
  8. Once the iPhone restarts, you should see the Cydia and Installer in the Home Screen
  9. Now, you have a jailbroken iPhone 2.2!

Unlock iPhone 3G

The beauty of the iPhone unlock solution, yellowsn0w is that it is available as a Cydia/Installer app! Once installed, it runs as an unobtrusive daemon in your iPhone. This means that you can add/remove this app via Cydia anytime.

  1. Open Cydia -> Manage -> Sources -> Edit -> Add
Add this repository URL http://apt9.yellowsn0w.com/ and return to Cydia.
  2. Now Search in Cydia for ‘yellowsn0w‘ and install it.
  3. Reboot your iPhone 3G with a different SIM
  4. A few seconds after reboot, you should get a signal with the new carrier!
  5. You have unlocked your iPhone 3G!!

Word of caution

Yellowsn0w is in version 0.9.4 and is considered beta software. This means that for some of us it may not work. It could be specific carriers or specific sims. But, do provide feedback to the Dev Team so they can improve this software for all of us.

Also, the above linked post has tons of comments from folks trying to unlock and is a minefield of good information to check out if you had issues doing this.

What a great effort by the Dev Team. You have our congratulations and wish everyone here a Happy New Year!

Update: 01/05/09

Dev-Team has updated yellowsn0w to version 0.9.6 beta. If you have had problems unlocking before, please try again with this new version.

iPhone 3g Unlock Releasing Today

Posted by karthik On December - 31 - 2008

Dev Team has promised to deliver the iPhone 3G software unlock today - on New Years Eve!

If you have a first generation iPhone, QuickPwn 2.2 & PwnageTool 2.2 would have already worked for you. But, those with iPhone 3g had to hold off from upgrading to firmware 2.2.

Why you shouldn’t have updated your iPhone 3g to 2.2 via iTunes?jailbreak iPhone 2.2

iPhone 2.2 firmware contained a baseband update - 02.28.00. Dev Team warned against updating to this firmware using iTunes as this would prevent you from unlocking your iPhone 3G with the software (dubbed yellowsn0w) they are going to release today.

But, there was a workaround. You could have created a custom 2.2 firmware with PwnageTool (Mac only) that contained the older iPhone 3g baseband. This will allow you to unlock your iPhone 3g now with yellowsn0w.

If you have already updated to 2.2 via iTunes, you are out of luck in 2008. Dev Team did warn us butthe team loves hacking and chllenges. I have no doubt that they will be able to hack the new baseband as well and provide an unlocking solution. But, just not yet.

Jailbreaking vs Unlocking

Do these 2 terms confuse you? No worries.

Jailbreaking: Apple intentionally locked you to download apps only from AppStore. Jailbreaking your iPhone lets you install apps from outside AppStore and customize your iPhone to your heart’s content. Two jailbreak apps that let you do this are - Cydia & Installer. Some of the things you can get with jailbreaking are Record video in iPhone, Categories, Backgrounder, Quickgold, Winterboard Themes, Podcaster, etc. Check out our jailbreaking how-to post to get an idea on what’s involved.

Unlocking: This has to do with AT&T. iPhones are locked so it works only with AT&Ts network. Usually carriers including AT&T will unlock your phone after you have been through a certain period in the contract so you can use the same device even if you switch carriers. Or even just travel outside the counrty. But not for iPhones. But, Dev Team is here for our rescue. iPhone 2g was unlocked a long time back but iPhone 3g proved a little bit harder but we are finally going to see that change today. Once you unlock, you can just switch the SIM card in your iPhone and use it on any carrier.

Happy New Year

We’ll come back with a post on how to unlock your iPhone 3g shortly after the software release. Until, then we’d like to wish you a Happy New Year! :-)

QuickPwn 2.2 & PwnageTool 2.2.1 Available for Download

Posted by shriya On November - 23 - 2008

Update 1/30/09

DevTeam Releases PwnageTool 2.2.5 to Jailbreak 2.2.1 (no QuickPwn 2.2.5 yet)

Update 1/29/09

iPhone firmware 2.2.1 has been released and you are probably here looking for Quickpwn or Pwnage to jailbreak 2.2.1 firmware. Dev Team hasn’t released an update yet for 2.2.1 and check this more up-to-date post here for current information on jailbreaking 2.2.1 firmware.

Dev Team rocks!

iPhone Dev Team has already come out with jailbreak software for iPhone firmware 2.2. Much faster than even the last time. In fact, last time Windows users had to wait a little for the QuickPwn but this time Dev Team released them all together.

Before you go downloading QuickPwn 2.2 or PwnageTool 2.2.1 and start jailbreaking, make sure you read this excellent post from Dev Team.

Quicpwn 2.2 and PwnageTool 2.2.1

  • iPhone 2G - Just update or restore to firmware 2.2 via iTunes and run QuickPwn.
  • iPod Touch 1G - Update to 2.2 with iTunes and run QuickPwn
  • iPod Touch 2G - no support at this time
  • Locked iPhone 3G - Read the Dev Team post before you jailbreak to understand. Basically, if you have hpes of soft unlocking your iPhone 3G, don’t use iTunes to update to 2.2 fimrware.
  • Locked iPhone 3G - If you have no intention of unlocking your iPhone in the future, then just update to 2.2 via iTunes and run QuickPwn.

Look out for our Step-by-step Guide to Jailbreak 2.2 Guide shortly today.

QuickGold Brings QuickSilver to iPhone [jailbreak app]

Posted by shriya On October - 9 - 2008

Tired of searching through your iPhone to find a contact? Tired of flicking through pages and pages of your iPhone Apps to find the app you need?

If you have a jailbroken iPhone, you might even have your apps categorized nicely into Categories with the jailbreak Cydia App categories. or you can find out how to categorize your iPhone/iPod Touch Apps.

It’s still hard sometimes to find the App. Here comes the magic bullet for this problem.

QuickGold is a Cydia app that is QuickSilver or Launchy for your iPhone. You just press the Home button twice to launch the search bar you see. And start typing away to see the matching entries. It nicely shows the entry as well as the type of entry with nice icons for Contacts, Apps, etc. For Apps, it even uses the icon for the App itself so it’s very easy to visually find the one you are looking for.

QuickGold sports search-as-you-type, which means as soon as you enter a letter it will start showing results and keep refining as you type. Which means fewer letters tyoed before you find the contact or App you are looking for. It can even launch pages on Safari and search Google for iPhone 3g if you typed g iPhone 3g. Isn’t that awesome?

So, what are you waiting for? Grab QuickGold today and save the frustration you face in finding anything in iPhone.

You can learn how to jailbreak 2.1 iPhone firmware in this article. If you like the winterboard theme I am using, you may like some of the best winterboard themes we have featured. Enjoy!

iPhone Backgrounder Runs Multiple iPhone Apps [jailbreak app]

Posted by shriya On October - 3 - 2008

If there is one thing that bothers me about my iPhone, it is the inability to play music in the background while I surf or chat or play a game, etc. Apple prevented this intentionally in view of the performance hit the iPhone could take when processes run in the background slowing things down.

With the free jailbreak app, Backgrounder you can now run iPhone Apps in the background. You can get Backgrounder from Cydia and of course you need a jailbroken iPhone to use this.

How to Use Backgrounder

It’s very simple. Let’s go to the app you want to run in the background say, Pandora. Once you have Pandora running, press and hold the Home button for a moment until you see the message below.

Then you will be taken to the Home Screen with Pandora running in the background.

If you are new to jailbreaking, our how to jailbreak iPhone 2.1 firmware with QuickPwn for Windows guide could help you out with that.

Now, enjoy what Apple says you can’t have! Of course there may be bugs or stuff that won’t work in the background but that’s not new to new in the jailbreak world, is it?

Podcaster iPhone App now available in Cydia [jailbreak app]

Posted by shriya On October - 1 - 2008

Podcaster is a very cool iPhone app that lets you subscribe to and download podcasts right to your iPhone without syncing via iTunes. This is a great handicap with the iPhone at the moment and Podcaster aims at solving this.

But, Apple wouldn’t have that citing that the app duplicates iTunes features! Whatever, right?

For those who have jailbroken iPhones, Podcaster is now available in Cydia. It is free to try for 14 days and then it is $4.99. If you are a heavy podcast listener, this might be an App worth paying for. Check it out..

Organize Your iPhone Apps with Categories [jailbreak app]

Posted by shriya On September - 29 - 2008

Now, that you know you have been finding some really cool iPhone Apps, both free and paid you may notice that your iPhone Dashboard is probably 5-6 pages long or even more if you get app-happy.

With the free jailbreak app Categories (available via Cydia), now you can organize your iPhone Apps in folders. With Categories, now my iPhone dashboard is just 2 pages. And that’s way better than the 7 pages I had before and it was pain to arrange them in any particular order or to quickly find the app I wanted to use.

If you have already jailbroken your iPhone, all you’d need to do is find Categories in Cydia and install it.

If you haven’t jailbroken your iPhone yet, no worries. We have a How to Jailbreak iPhone 2.1 Firmware with QuickPwn guide that could help you do it easily. I did mine in under 20 minutes and it was very straightforward.

Once you have it installed via Cydia, Categories lets you create folders and assign any icon of your choice from a wide variety of icon collection as shown below.

You can see the folders I have created in the below picture. To add more categories, just press the Add button in the top right corner.

To add Apps into a Category you have created, just touch the category name and you will get an empty screen with an Add button in the top right corner. Now touch the add button and you will see a list of all the apps installed in your iPhone. All you need to do is tap the apps that you want added in the folder.

Once you have organized your apps to your liking in different folders, you may wish to rearrange some apps to a different folders. Just go in to the category and tap on the edit button on the top left corner. Now just delete the apps you don’t want in this folder.

Here is how it looks after I have organized my apps into the following categories: News, Notes, Fun, Webclip (videos), Music, Games, Showtime (movies), Food, Finance, etc.

I think jailbreaking my iPhone is worth just for the convenience of using Categories to organize my Apps. What do you think?
