Undo iPhone OS 3.0 Typing by Shaking

Posted by shriya On June - 22 - 2009

iPhone OS 3.0 has a lot of new features. But, I keep discovering little thoughts tweaks here and there. In fact, I had missed this one and came to know from Patrick of my favorite iPhone blog.

You are probably loving the copy, paste functionality much in OS 3.0. But, did you know instead of holding down the backspace button to delete characters, you can undo your whole typing in input fields by just shaking your iPhone.

Undo Typing in iPhone OS 3.0

This feature is definitely nifty but it would be super cool to have some sort of undo history function added to it. But, hey I welcome even this small but thoughtful add-on.

In fact, if you just copied and pasted a blob of text in the wrong place, just shake your iPhone to undo the whole paste.

Hi5 to Patrick for this tip!

How to Jailbreak & Unlock iPhone OS 3.0 in Windows?

Posted by karthik On June - 20 - 2009

Dev Team has come through again and have released their jailbreak and unlocking (iPhone 2G)  tool for Windows hot on the heels of OS 3.0 PwnageTool for Mac.

The RedSn0w released works on Windows and Mac OS. Redsn0w works just like QuickPwn for Windows and version 0.7.1 has just been released with a bug fix for Windows.

An important thing to note is that, pwnapple

Redsn0w can jailbreak

  • iPhone 2G
  • iPhone 3G
  • iPod Touch (original) and iPod Touch 2G

Redsn0w cannot jailbreak

  • iPhone 3GS

Redsn0w can unlock

  • iPhone 2G (both unlocked and original)

Redsnow cannot unlock

  • iPhone 3G
  • iPhone 3G S

If you have a iPhone 3G and rely on unlocking for getting cellular service, you have to wait until Ultrasn0w is released sometime soon via Cydia.

Before you attempt the jailbreak, I strongly recommend reading and re-reading instructions by Dev Team. Also, make a backup of your iPhone via iTunes before you get started.

How to Unlock iPhone OS 3.0 with Redsn0w?

Here are the steps you need to follow word by word. Again check if your device is supported with this version of  Redsn0w.

  1. Create a folder in your desktop named Quickpwn
    1. Download RedSn0w and place it in the Quickpwn folder
    2. Extract the RedSn0w.zip into the Quickpwn folder
    3. Download the relevant OS 3.0 firmware
      3.0 (2G):  iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw
      3.0 (3G): iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw
  2. Connect your iPhone to iTunes and select your iPhone.
  3. Hold the Shift button and click on Restore
  4. Now, select the ipsw file from the Quickpwn folder and hit the Open button
  5. Once iTunes has finished updating to the new 3.0 firmware, launch the redsn0w.exe file from your Quickpwn folder.
  6. Click Browse and select the firmware ipsw file in Quickpwn folder
  7. Once the firmware has been successfully verified by redSn0w, click Next
  8. Select Install Cydia in this screen and click Next
  9. Now plug your iPhone into the computer and make sure its turned OFF before clicking Next
  10. You will be guided by RedSn0w through the DFU mode - its not hard. Just follow the instructions on the screen as follows
    • Hold down the Power button for 2 seconds
    • Without releasing the Power button, hold down the Home button for 6 seconds
    • Without releasing the Home button, release the Power button. Continue holding the Home button for 29 seconds
  11. Your iPhone will now reboot
  12. RedSn0w will begin uploading the new RAMDISK to your iPhone
  13. Once RedSn0w tells you it’s done, click on Finish.
  14. Wait till your iPhone reboots again (5 mins) and you will see Cydia app in your Springboard.

Now enjoy your jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch and have fun with stuff like iPhone Winterboard themes!

We will be updaying this post with screenshots for illustration soon. So, please check back if you need further help with that.

PwnageTool Download for iPhone OS 3.0 Jailbreaking

Posted by karthik On June - 19 - 2009

Dev Team has come through again and PwnageTool for iPhone OS 3.0 has been released.

Remember, this is for Mac OS X only. PC users will have to wait a bit longer as always.

DO NOT use PwnageTool of you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w unlock and rely on unlocking to get cellular service!

Here is the Dev Team complete post and here are the most important points you should know before attempting to jailbreak your iPhone with the relevant parts highlighted (by me)

  • GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w and rely on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should NOT use PwnageTool right now. UltraSn0w is not included with this release and therefore your baseband will be locked and unable to use an operator other than the official one it was bought for. UltraSn0w will be release via APT (cydia and icy) soon. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.0 unlock works with this PwnageTool release.
  • Yellowsn0w in its current form will NOT work with the baseband version that is present in the 3.0 update, you will need Ultrasn0w, which will be released sometime soon, Ultrasn0w will work with all iPhone 3G models (but not 3GS), even ones that were previously unlockable, Ultrasn0w (when available) will be released via APT (this means you can get it via Cydia or Icy).
  • Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
  • Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
  • At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the 3.0 capable version of PwnageTool.
  • This app is suitable for the recent 3.0 release.
  • PwnageTool will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.
  • PwnageTool WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch (1st Generation) and the iPhone 3G.

Official PwnageTool 3.0 Download (bittorrent link)

iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G (with yellowsn0w) unlock as well as PC users will have to wait until DevTeam posts further developments. Stay tuned here or on Twitter and we will bring you updates as we get them.

Clippy Brings Copy/Paste to iPhone [jailbreak app]

Posted by karthik On January - 22 - 2009

Apple doesn’t seem to care that we really could use the copy/paste functionality in iPhone. But, that’s why we love the jailbreaking community.

Clippy is a jailbreak app available via Cydia in your iPhone. Clippy brings copy/paste in most apps where the keyboard is available. Eg. Mail, Notes, SMS, Maps etc but not in Safari.

With Clippy installed, you just open the keyboard and hit the ‘.?123′ button to see ‘Copy’ and ‘Paste’ buttons at the top of the keyboard. Now just use your finger to select a region and press Copy. You get visual confirmation that the text actually copied by seeing the first few letters near the ‘Paste’ button.

Clippy Copy/paste

Now, just head on over to the app ou want the text to be copied to, hit the 123 button again and press ‘Paste’.

Are you wondering why you would need this? Imagine if you have a long address in your email and you want to map it. Unless you have an excellent memory, Clippy makes it ludicrously easy to just copy the address and plug it into Maps app!

It would be great to have this in Safari as well but this is a great start. MagicPad was another app that promised copy paste in iPhone.

I know some of us are nervous about jailbreaking, but reasons such as this available only via Cydia it might be worthwhile to jailbreak your iPhone 3g.

iPhone 3g Unlock Releasing Today

Posted by karthik On December - 31 - 2008

Dev Team has promised to deliver the iPhone 3G software unlock today - on New Years Eve!

If you have a first generation iPhone, QuickPwn 2.2 & PwnageTool 2.2 would have already worked for you. But, those with iPhone 3g had to hold off from upgrading to firmware 2.2.

Why you shouldn’t have updated your iPhone 3g to 2.2 via iTunes?jailbreak iPhone 2.2

iPhone 2.2 firmware contained a baseband update - 02.28.00. Dev Team warned against updating to this firmware using iTunes as this would prevent you from unlocking your iPhone 3G with the software (dubbed yellowsn0w) they are going to release today.

But, there was a workaround. You could have created a custom 2.2 firmware with PwnageTool (Mac only) that contained the older iPhone 3g baseband. This will allow you to unlock your iPhone 3g now with yellowsn0w.

If you have already updated to 2.2 via iTunes, you are out of luck in 2008. Dev Team did warn us butthe team loves hacking and chllenges. I have no doubt that they will be able to hack the new baseband as well and provide an unlocking solution. But, just not yet.

Jailbreaking vs Unlocking

Do these 2 terms confuse you? No worries.

Jailbreaking: Apple intentionally locked you to download apps only from AppStore. Jailbreaking your iPhone lets you install apps from outside AppStore and customize your iPhone to your heart’s content. Two jailbreak apps that let you do this are - Cydia & Installer. Some of the things you can get with jailbreaking are Record video in iPhone, Categories, Backgrounder, Quickgold, Winterboard Themes, Podcaster, etc. Check out our jailbreaking how-to post to get an idea on what’s involved.

Unlocking: This has to do with AT&T. iPhones are locked so it works only with AT&Ts network. Usually carriers including AT&T will unlock your phone after you have been through a certain period in the contract so you can use the same device even if you switch carriers. Or even just travel outside the counrty. But not for iPhones. But, Dev Team is here for our rescue. iPhone 2g was unlocked a long time back but iPhone 3g proved a little bit harder but we are finally going to see that change today. Once you unlock, you can just switch the SIM card in your iPhone and use it on any carrier.

Happy New Year

We’ll come back with a post on how to unlock your iPhone 3g shortly after the software release. Until, then we’d like to wish you a Happy New Year! :-)

How to Remove iTunes Music DRM?

Posted by shriya On October - 28 - 2008

If you have been looking to remove DRM protection from iTunes music, look no further. The freeware named DVDneXtCOPY iTurns Free does this for free by converting your iTunes music library into DRM-free mp3 files!

iTurns Free works by stripping the DRM protection from audio purchased from iTunes music store. It installs a virtual CD burner on Windows (works on Windows only).

How to Remove iTunes DRM

  1. Install iTurns Free
  2. Select iTurns Free as the default burner in iTunes Settings
  3. Click on iTurns Free icon in your task bar and choose where to store converted iTunes files
  4. Simply create a playlist of songs you want to remove DRM
  5. Burn playlist. Voila!

In a few easy steps you have made drm-free MP3 songs from your iTunes music collection. This also works on WMA (Windows Media audio) files as well.

iTurns Free - Free vs Pro

The free version works just fine to convert iTunes or WMA files to drm-free mp3. The pro version that sells for $29.99 however gives you a handful of extra options. You can convert to MP4, OGG Vorbis, built-in burning engine, etc.

The way this software works doesn’t even violate any copyright law and gives you the value for the money you spent by using the music you bought on multiple computers or players, etc. You can now port your purchased music to any player of your choice!

How to Jailbreak 2.1 Firmware Using QuickPwn For Windows

Posted by shriya On September - 25 - 2008

Update: 11/21/08

iPhone firmware 2.2 has been released! If you’d like to jailbreak 2.2, here’s why you shouldn’t update to 2.2 yet.

I am sure you’ve probably heard that Quickpwn 2.1 for Windows has been released by the dev team. High five to them for making the jailbreak process easier than ever that even your grandma can do it. If your grandma, has an iPhone that will be some picture you should share it with us.

The reason I am posting this a few days after the Quickpwn release is because I had trouble jailbreaking my iPhone 3g. But, I have a feeling this had to do with the fact that I had already jailbroken my iPhone 2.0.2 with Quickpwn. I will get to that and how I solved it later in the post.

If you haven’t jailbroken your iPhone yet

Again, if you have already jailbroken your iPhone, check the section below proceeding. If you are already updated your iPhone to 2.1 firmware and ready to jailbreak then you can start from this step. Oherwise update to 2.1firmware through iTunes and then you are ready to jailbreak your iPhone.

  1. Download QuickPwn 2.1 for Windows from here, extract the files and save it in a new folder named as QuickPwn in your computer. And save your updated 2.1 firmware in the same QuickPwn folder (firmware download links). You shouldn’t even need this as Quickpwn detects your installed firmware.
  2. Connect your iphone  via USB cable to computer. Now run the QuickPwn.exe file in the QuickPwn folder. In this step it will make sure your iphone is connected via USB and click the Blue arrow to continue.
  3. Now in this step it will automatically detect your 2.1firmware from your computer. If not browse and select the firmware you previously saved in your QuickPwn folder and click the blue arrow to continue.
  4. Next step select Cydia , Installer and if you want to replace the boot logos select it too. And click the Blue arrow to continue to next step. I like the Apple logo instead.
  5. In this step it again asks you to confirm your iPhone is connceted via USB and click the arrow to continue.
  6. Here in this step follow the QuickPwn instructions carefully . First it will automatically put your iPhone into recovery mode and once it goes to recovery mode you will be directed to
    • hold your home button for 5 seconds
    • hold down the home and power buttons together for 10 seconds
    • release the power button and continue to hold the home button til you see the jailbreaking progress in your iPhone and then let go..
  7. With mine, even after this message was shown, the iPhone was showing some jailbreak messages with nice graphics. So, I waited pateiently for it to complete and reboot. Voila, everything came back up and worked! Hello Cydia & Installer!

If you have previously jailbroken your iPhone

If you haven’t jailbroken your iPhone before at all, you can just use the section above without a worry. To set the stage this was my status when I started:

  • iPhone 3G
  • iTunes 8
  • Previously jailbroken with 2.0.2 firmware
  • Upgraded to firmware 2.1

The Problem

Now, when I used Quickpwn 2.1 (windows) to jailbreak everything worked fine but at the end the iPhone will just keep hanging at the Apple logo screen at startup. It would do that and vibrate twice and iTunes would even recognize the iPhone but again it would reboot. This would go on until I disconnected it from iTunes, manually rebooted. Now, I can get into the iPhone but no Cydia or Installer.

The Solution

It turns out that the startup was failing because it was missing BossPrefs, 5 icon dock, Springboard, etc. I suspect it was trying to find one of these jailbreak apps I had previously installed at startup, failed and kept restarting. I kind of found this by trial and error. Because jailbreaking with QuickPwn worked on my iPhone if I reset my iPhone to factory settings by using ‘Restore’ function in iTunes 8 and not choosing to restore from a backup. I was now able to see Cydia & Installer.

So I went ahead and installed BossPrefs, Springboard, 5 icon dock, etc and made sure none of my app icons were hidden. Then I synced my iPhone to the backup I had done before starting the jailbreak. Voila, now iPhone started up fine.

In fact, this excellent guide on how to upgrade in iTunes at Sleepers.net which I came across pretty late helped me do this.

If you haven’t already messed up like I did, I highly suggest following that guide to create a backup of your Cydia apps list with AptBackup jailbreak app. Also, if you have hid some icons with BossPrefs or other apps, make sure you unhide them before you start jailbreaking. If you still having problems, this thread at MacRumours or this post at Sleepers.net might help you out.

The End

In the end, the jailbreak process itself takes just anywhere from 10-20 minutes and hasn’t been this simple so far. If you don’t make the same mistakes I did, it should be very straight forward and hope these tips helped you successfully jailbreaking your iPhone. After jailbreaking, don’t forget to get some iPhone winterboard themes for your jailbroken iPhone! Here is what mine looks like now:

Doesn’t this make the jailbreaking effort worth it?

No word on when QuickPwn for iPod Touch or Winpwn 3.0 will be released yet. Stay tuned or subscribe to our RSS feed if you don’t want to miss future updates.
