iTunes Music Becomes DRM Free

Posted by karthik On January - 6 - 2009

Today was the MacWorld 2009 Keynote day.

Phil Schiller handled the Keynote today as opposed to Steve Jobs who is going through a patch of bad health.

iTunes received a fair bit of attention today at the Keynote. But, not in terms of technology innovation like the announcement of the Genius feature last time.

iTunes music store is going completely DRM Free! itunes 8 plus

Here are a few more iTunes stats thrown around in the Keynote:

  • iTunes has sold 6 billion songs
  • iTunes holds over 10 million different tracks
  • There are now over 75 million accounts on iTunes with credit cards
  • Today, 8 million songs are DRM free and all 10 million will be by the end of March

You can now buy DRM free music from iTunes. You now get a ‘Create MP3 version’ when you right click on the song.

iTunes Plus

You can also get DRM Free upgrades to your existing iTunes collection through a iTunes Plus Apple Program that features songs with high quality 256 kbps AAC encoding.

Upgrading individual songs to DRM Free iTunes Plus tracks will set you back about 30 cents a song, 60 cents for a music video and $3 for most albums.

Also, iTunes Plus has now made it so that you can download songs from both WiFi or cellular network.

Other than this and the announcement of a 17″ Macbook Pro, there wasn’t much news on iPhone 3G or iPod Touch. So we were like meh!

Killer Pool - Best iPhone Pool Game

Posted by karthik On January - 5 - 2009

I love a game of pool and I like it enough to be playing in a 8-ball pool league (BCA) in our town.

I just recently had a chance to try out Killer Pool on our iPhone 3g and I had to share it with you. This has to be one of the best pool physics I have seen in an iPhone pool game. I used to be so addicted to Yahoo Pool at one time and now this pp has rekindled that interest again.

Killer Pool was created by Sauce Digital and they have done an excellent job in recreating the fun of this game for iPhone & iPod Touch.

Here are a few screenshots of the game screens

Control Your iTunes Media with Keyboard

Posted by karthik On December - 1 - 2008

iTunes ia a great media player and has seen a lot of improvements lately. But one feature that it is sorely lacking is keyboard support for controlling playback of your media.

You cannot pause, play, forward, skip a playing media with a keyboard hotkey. You can’t let iTunes run in the background and control your media without reaching for your mouse.

iTunes Media Keys lets you do just that. It is a small utility that lets you control playback in iTunes right from your keyboard.

You can Play/Pause, Stop, or skip to Next Track or Previous Track with this small utility. Nothing fancy just that important functionality we have all longed so far in iTunes.

We have also written previously on how to remove DRM from iTunes media.

Dev-Team Warns Against Updating to Firmware 2.2

Posted by karthik On November - 21 - 2008

The muct awaited iPhone firmware 2.2 is here. We can hardly contain our excitement and we’d love to update to firmware 2.2 as soon as we can. Probably so are you.

But, we love jailbreaking and our beloved iPhone Dev-Team warns against updating to firmware 2.2 yet. In fact, this is what they say exactly

If you want to keep that option of a ’soft-unlock in the near future’ available but you want the new features of 2.2, you will be able to update to 2.2 using a PwnageTool created custom ipsw file that disables the baseband update. You will be able to do this using an updated version of PwnageTool that will be released sometime soon.

A few reasons they cite against updating to 2.2

  • 2.2 firmware for 3G contains baseband update for the 3G iPhone
  • PwnageTool & QuickPwn do not support his release yet, so don’t update to 2.2 via iTunes.
  • Your iPhone could become deactivated and unusable if you had previously relied on PwnageTool or QuickPwn to activate and if you now applied this update.
  • Non AppStore apps will stop working
  • 2G (ist gen) iPhone users can theoratically be able to update to 2.2 via iTunes and preserve existing activation. But, if you restore to 2.2 iTunes, your iPhone will go to unactivated state. If in doubt, hold off for the updated PwnageTool or QuickPwn.

We will bring you the most current news on PwnageTool and QuickPwn as we learn. So stay tuned.

As you can see, our posts on jailbreak 2.1 & winterboard themes are the most popular in the site and firmware 2.2 will be no different. We will bring you detailed step by step instructions as we do it on our own iPhone 3G.

If you’d like to stay updated, you can get free automatic updates with our RSS feed or even get notified by email. If you are a Twitterer, we are at twitter.com/TopiPhone.

How to Remove iTunes Music DRM?

Posted by shriya On October - 28 - 2008

If you have been looking to remove DRM protection from iTunes music, look no further. The freeware named DVDneXtCOPY iTurns Free does this for free by converting your iTunes music library into DRM-free mp3 files!

iTurns Free works by stripping the DRM protection from audio purchased from iTunes music store. It installs a virtual CD burner on Windows (works on Windows only).

How to Remove iTunes DRM

  1. Install iTurns Free
  2. Select iTurns Free as the default burner in iTunes Settings
  3. Click on iTurns Free icon in your task bar and choose where to store converted iTunes files
  4. Simply create a playlist of songs you want to remove DRM
  5. Burn playlist. Voila!

In a few easy steps you have made drm-free MP3 songs from your iTunes music collection. This also works on WMA (Windows Media audio) files as well.

iTurns Free - Free vs Pro

The free version works just fine to convert iTunes or WMA files to drm-free mp3. The pro version that sells for $29.99 however gives you a handful of extra options. You can convert to MP4, OGG Vorbis, built-in burning engine, etc.

The way this software works doesn’t even violate any copyright law and gives you the value for the money you spent by using the music you bought on multiple computers or players, etc. You can now port your purchased music to any player of your choice!

Ok. This is a really cool trick I just found.

How would you like to be able to add music, videos, podcats from multiple machines to your iPhone or iPod Touch?

Normally you can sync media on iPhone with only one computer but most of us use multiples computers in a day but carry our iPhone around everywhere.

Lucky for us, Andrew Grant has figured out how to do this! Click over and check out his post on how to do this. It’s not really that hard and he has pictures to assist with the instructions.

Simplest Way to Get Popular iPhone Ringtones

Posted by shriya On October - 3 - 2008

I was just browsing through my feed reader and came across this post by Cody on iPhone Download Blog about an interesting website for iPhone ringtones.

We have seen here on how to create iPhone ringtones using the free utility iRinger. But, you needed to have the music file with you in order to create the ringtone of your choice.

Myxer.com on the other hand has a wide range of popular ringtones of various categories available for download. Mind you, this isn’t really an iPhone oriented site and it seems to be popular for most cell phones. You can pick a ringtone and have it sent to your phone.

For iPhone though, this doesn’t work but there is a workaround. When you are looking at a ringtone in Myxer.com, you will a Download for iPhone link as you see in the picture. You will see that the ringtone you are downloading is in the iTunes friendly .m4r format.

Once you download it, you just need to drag it into iTunes and sync your iPhone! Yes, it’s that simple. And Myxer has a boatload of popular ringtones for you to enjoy. Thanks Cody for the heads up!
