Apple iPhone - News, Tips, Apps, Accesories, Reviews for you

Apple has seeded iPhone OS 3.1 to developers with a few new features.

  • Voice Control activation from a Bluetooth Headset
  • iPhone vibrates on moving apps on the Home Screen
  • Modem firmware updated to 5.08.01
  • OpenGL and Quartz improvements
  • Cut, Copy, Paste functionality in Dial Pad of Phone App
  • Non destructive Video editing - option to trim your clip then “Save as copy…” instead of replacing the original clip.
  • APIs to allow third party apps to access videos and edit them

But, OS 3.1 might leave some iPhones out there completely disabled for ultrasn0w per Dev Team. Here is what they are saying:

You’ve seen us give this warning before, and there are only so many ways to say it or come up with a clever title :) But here it is: ultrasn0w users must stay away from any firmware updates past 3.0 (including today’s 3.1 beta) until we release the tools that let you update the firmware without updating the baseband.  For most phones out there, baseband updates are irreversible and you’ll lose ultrasn0w.

The 3.0 jailbreak was one of those (rare) times where both the jailbreak and the unlock coincided (the only other time was 2.2).  It’s important that people realize that *most* firmware releases aren’t like that, and you need to take steps (via the tools) to separate the firmware update from its included baseband update.

This warning does not apply to the iPhone 2G, which uses BootNeuter for the unlock, not ultrasn0w.

This does not affect iPhone 2G so if you have a 3G or 3GS and want to unlock your iPhone, hold your horses - as always.

However, you can jailbreak your iPhone 3g with redsn0w right now.

TiR Gets A New Design

Posted by karthik On June - 29 - 2009

Our love affair with iPhones takes on a new life with the arrival of a 32GB black iPhone 3GS in our family.

To celebrate that, we have given our site a makeover and released a new design last night. We welcome you to take a look and let us know your comments.

There are still little bugs creeping around under covers and we need your help in finding them. Please let us know either through the comments or the contact form if you come across any. We will deeply appreciate it.

Internet Explorer/Safari bug

At present, the picture carousal (one of the cool things in the new design) isn’t working in Internet Explorer and Safari. It works fine in Firefox & Google Chrome and we are working hard to fix it.

2 Open slots for Guest Bloggers

We are opening up 2 slots iPhone fans to guest blog here. If you like to review iPhone apps, accesories, share your tricks and tips with fellow iPhoners, this could be your chance to reach a wide audience. We get over 60,000+ pageviews a month and growing.

Unfortunately, this is not a paid gig but you will get some good exposure (link to your site and a brief bio in every post). And as the site turns profitable (we are working hard on it) we have plans for adsense profit sharing, etc in the future. If you are interested, shoot us your bio and why you would like to write for us. We will send you more details following that.

Advertisements

We try to keep the advertisements to a minimum. In fact, we love our regular readers so much we don’t even show in-post ads to you. As much as we hate ads on sites we visit too, they are a vital source of revenue to keep the site running and make it better as well. So, only new readers visiting us through search engines see the in-post ads.

However, we do appreciate if you do take a look at our Sponsors (in the side area) and see what they are about if they interest you.

As a final word, thank you for visiting and supporting Top iPhone Resource. I won’t bore you anymore with these site information but we were so excited to let you know the plans we have for our beloved site.

More great stuff is in the air here. Back to regular programming now.

You have probably seen sneak peek of the new iPhone 3GS demo from Apple’s Guided Tour.

A YouTube video of the new iPhone 3GS has been found in the wild. The speaker demoing the iPhone 3GS is speaking Portuguese or Greek, I am not sure.

But, this video is great to just watch the various new features of the iPhone 3GS in action.

Pricing in US

iPhone 3GS has been announced at the following prices and will be available on June 19.

  • 32GB iPhone 3GS - $299 with contract
  • 16GB iPhone 3GS - $199 with contract

The current iPhone 3G will continue to be available at

  • 16GB iPhone 3G - $99 with contract

So, the $99 iPhone rumor was correct after all. It was a little disappointing to not find the front facing camera but the rest of the features are enough to make me go out and buy a 32GB iPhone 3GS! How about you?

If you have been holding off on buying a iPhone so far, I’d say iPhone 3GS makes a pretty good case for buying one.

iPhone OS 3.0

iPhone OS 3.0 will be available on June 17th for download via iTunes. And you can read about iPhone 3.0 new features here. if you have a jailbreak iPhone, please wait until the Devteam releases Quickpwn 3.0 or Pwnage 3.0 before updating your iPhone OS!

iPhone OS 3.0 New Features Announced

Posted by shriya On March - 17 - 2009

After all the rumors that went around the blog world about the iPhone 3.0 OS, today it was great to find out most of them were indeed true.

Are you ready for the long list of features (over 100) that are coming in iPhone 3.0?

New Features For Us

  • Cut, copy & paste - Works for both text and photos. You can copy multiple photos to Main. Shake to undo/redo a paste.
  • A2DP Stereo Bluetooth - pair iPhone to a stereo Bluetooth device iPhone OS 3.0
  • MMS - forward and delete multiple messages
  • Spotlight - search across all your content and apps that support Spotlight
  • Search in Mail, Calendar & iPod - special search interfaces including searching in IMAP servers
  • Tethering - built into iPhone OS 3.0 - careers will determine pricing
  • Auto-login for WiFi hotspots
  • Landscape Keyboard - in more apps like Mail, SMS & Notes
  • New Calendar types - Gmail and Yahoo friendly CalDAV support
  • Note syncing with iTunes in Mac and PC
  • Autologin in Safari - remembers username/passwords
  • Shake to shuffle - in iPod while listening to music to change tracks
  • Parental control - adult content filters to movies, TV shows, apps plus websites and music.
  • Enhanced App Store - app subscriptions, purchase additional content like travel guides to new cities, levels to games, etc.
  • YouTube account support
  • Form auto-fill
  • New Stocks app - with news stories and landscape view

New Features for Developers

Developers get over a 1000 new APIs.

  • Peer-to-peer connectivity over Bluetooth for gaming and info-swapping
  • Ability to take payments within Apps to give access to paid content
  • Allows call out to Google Maps
  • Turn-by-turn GPS information on iPhone without needed 3G connectivity or Google
  • Push notification - finally
  • iPhone 3.0 apps can access VOIP via WiFi connectinb
  • Audio recording, streaming video
  • Access iPhone/iPod music library from other applications

Features that didn’t make it

  • No background apps - we still have the jailbreak app Backgrounder  (of course QuickPwn 3.0 will have to come out then)
  • No better way to arrange and manage apps in your home screen - thank God for jailbreak apps like QuickGold & Categories.

It’s plainly an incredible iPhone OS release with over 100 new features and over 1000 new APIs for iPhone developers. With the imminent competition from Palm Pre in the coming months, Apple has answered back addressing a lot of the long overdue features such as copy/paste, push notification, MMS, etc.

iPhone OS 3.0 will be a free upgrade to iPhone 3G users. iPhone 2G users can also upgrade to 3.0 but won’t have some features like A2DP due to hardware limitations.

iPod Touch 2G users can also upgrade to iPhone 3.0 by paying $9.95. Also, the Bluetooth has been unlocked in iPod Touch in 3.0 firmware.

Apple has again proved that they can listen to their users and respond back, albeit in this instance a little late. If this is a little too late remains to be seen. But, I can’t wait to get my hands on iPhone OS 3.0 that’s set to come out this Summer of ‘09.

Get Your NPR Fix in iPhone

Posted by shriya On January - 10 - 2009

I am a NPR news junkie. I listen to it in my car. I listen to it at work. Except for at times when I am away from my car or when I am not at work.

If you didn’t know, NPR is National Public Radio that offers a huge variety of programs, local news, national news, music, talk shows, business news, politics, etc.

Not anymore. I can listen to it from my iPhone with the Public Radio Tuner app that’s available for Free.

Public Radio Tuner brings your local NPR station via your iPhone no matter where you are in the world.

Public Radio Tuner

In fact, Public Radio Tuner goes beyond NPR and is actually a unique collaboration between American Public Media (APM), National Public Radio (NPR), Public Radio Exchange (PRX), Public Interactive (PI) and Public Radio International (PRI).

Public Radio Tuner

  • This app has over 200 high quality public radio streams
  • Easy to use interface
  • Search by call letters, frequency, city, region or format
  • Favorite a station to stream again
  • Use GPS to find your local station

Public Radio Tuner is a godsend for news-junkies like myself. I hope you’d like it too.

How to Jailbreak 2.2 & Unlock iPhone 3G?

Posted by shriya On January - 2 - 2009

The much awaited iPhone 3g unlock solution has arrived! A big hi-five to the Dev Team for releasing yellowsn0w on New Year’s eve.

One great news about this iPhone 3g unlock solution - yellowsn0w is that it works on iPhone firmware 2.2’s new baseband. We did pass on the earlier warning that this might not work but Dev Team got it to work on 2.2’s baseband (02.28.0.0) as well.

We successfully unlocked our iPhone 3g yesterday and here’s how we did it. I’ll add some screenshots to this post as soon as I get a chance.

Ingredients

  • iTunes 8
  • iPhone firmware 2.2
  • QuickPwn 2.2
  • Jailbroken iPhone 3G

Quick iPhone 3G Jailbreak & Unlock Recipe

Please note that this is what worked for us and it might be a little different for you. I am making this a quick recipe as this is very similar to the steps we followed for quickpwn 2.1 jailbreak.

Jailbreak iPhone 2.2

Skip to next section if you have already updated to 2.2 and jailbroken your iPhone 3G with QuickPwn 2.2 or PwnageTool. If you have updated 2.2 via iTunes but not jailbroken yet, start with step 5.

  1. Undo hidden apps via BossPrefs
  2. Uninstalled Categories (this proved to be a problem when we updated to 2.1 and may not be needed with this update)
  3. Backed up everything via iTunes (consider using AptBackup Cydia app to backup your app settings)
  4. Used iTunes to update to 2.2
  5. Downloaded Quickpwn 2.2 and launched it
  6. Follow the instructions in QuickPwn
  7. Once the iPhone is in recover mode (DFU mode)
    • hold your home button for 5 seconds
    • hold down the home and power button for 10 seconds
    • release the power button and continue to hold the home button to see the jailbreak progress and then let go of the home button
  8. Once the iPhone restarts, you should see the Cydia and Installer in the Home Screen
  9. Now, you have a jailbroken iPhone 2.2!

Unlock iPhone 3G

The beauty of the iPhone unlock solution, yellowsn0w is that it is available as a Cydia/Installer app! Once installed, it runs as an unobtrusive daemon in your iPhone. This means that you can add/remove this app via Cydia anytime.

  1. Open Cydia -> Manage -> Sources -> Edit -> Add
Add this repository URL http://apt9.yellowsn0w.com/ and return to Cydia.
  2. Now Search in Cydia for ‘yellowsn0w‘ and install it.
  3. Reboot your iPhone 3G with a different SIM
  4. A few seconds after reboot, you should get a signal with the new carrier!
  5. You have unlocked your iPhone 3G!!

Word of caution

Yellowsn0w is in version 0.9.4 and is considered beta software. This means that for some of us it may not work. It could be specific carriers or specific sims. But, do provide feedback to the Dev Team so they can improve this software for all of us.

Also, the above linked post has tons of comments from folks trying to unlock and is a minefield of good information to check out if you had issues doing this.

What a great effort by the Dev Team. You have our congratulations and wish everyone here a Happy New Year!

Update: 01/05/09

Dev-Team has updated yellowsn0w to version 0.9.6 beta. If you have had problems unlocking before, please try again with this new version.

Walmart Gets iPhone Kiosk

Posted by karthik On December - 29 - 2008

So, atleast part of the iPhone rumors were true.

Walmart has officially started selling iPhone 3G at select stores. Walmart becomes the second third-party retailer in the US to sell iPhone 3G besides Best Buy who even offered an iPhone buying guide.

iphone 3g walmart

Although earlier rumors pointed at Walmart and even Costco to sell a cheaper version of iPhone 3G, possibly a 4GB iPhone for $99, that part proved to be untrue.

Walmart is selling iPhone 3G 16 GB with a 2 year contract for $297 and the 8GB model for $197. With Walmart catering to a wider range of consumers, Apple could actually end up selling more iPhones this way. We’ll have to wait and see how this changes the game.
