Control Your iTunes Media with Keyboard

Posted by karthik On December - 1 - 2008

iTunes ia a great media player and has seen a lot of improvements lately. But one feature that it is sorely lacking is keyboard support for controlling playback of your media.

You cannot pause, play, forward, skip a playing media with a keyboard hotkey. You can’t let iTunes run in the background and control your media without reaching for your mouse.

iTunes Media Keys lets you do just that. It is a small utility that lets you control playback in iTunes right from your keyboard.

You can Play/Pause, Stop, or skip to Next Track or Previous Track with this small utility. Nothing fancy just that important functionality we have all longed so far in iTunes.

We have also written previously on how to remove DRM from iTunes media.

Compare iPhone App Ranks & Trends - Mybefia

Posted by shriya On November - 11 - 2008

Mybefia is a web application that fills the niche where you want to get trend information for iPhone Applications that are available in AppStore.

You can see the Daily top 100 free apps, paid apps, etc. But, this doesn’t actually show how a particular App behaved over a time frame. It doesn’t show a App’s marketshare.

Yaniv Solnik of bee.tv saw this need and filled it with his own app that is Mybefia.com.

Mybefia Features

  • Lets you compare Apps ‘Alexa style’ - compare upto 3 apps and check its trend, rank, reviews, popularity as well as marketshare.
    mybefia
  • Leaderboard page shows
    • Top 100 Free Apps
    • Top 100 Paid Apps
    • Top 250 Apps by Popularity
    • Top 250 Apps by Reviews
  • Leadeboard apps also show a red or green arrow indicating a Apps day to day popularity
  • Leaderboard compare feature requires you to paste iTunes links to compare
  • The Alex style compare feature however, autofills App names as you type.

MyBefia is a pretty cool tool for those looking for more insightful data on App in the AppStore.

You could even win $50 if you guess what Mybefia is.

My guess: Mybefia is to address my beef with the AppStore that doesn’t give me useful data.

Remember the Milk Pro Gets iPhone App

Posted by shriya On November - 5 - 2008

Remember the Milk has to be one of the best online task manager application out there. It offers so many cool features plus it extends it’s usability by offering integrating with iCal, Google Calendar, Gmail, etc. It’s even available as a RTM Google gadget in Gmail.

Remember the Milk Pro users enjoyed a iPhone friendly webapp so far but one thing that’s been long time coming was a native iPhone/iPod Touch app. But, make no mistake the webapp is no match to this powerful native iPhone app.

And its here. Here are the cool features you get with it

  • Use RTM app completely offline and sync up when you have a data or WiFi connection
  • Organize by Lists, Smart Lists, Tags or Location
  • View tasks by due date, priority or task name
  • Add, edit tasks with all the options you get in the web
  • Swipe across a task to mark it complete
  • Manage multiple tasks at once with the edit button
  • See tasks nearby to where you are with the location feature
  • Supports landscape mode for easy typing

RTM has finally delivered the much anticipated iPhone/iPod Touch app and it completely rocks! I love the ‘locatedWithin’ search feature plus the fact that it remembers which screen you were on when you closed the app.

Just remember, even though this app is free in AppStore, you need the PRO Remember the Milk account to use this app.

Beam Contacts & Pictures iPhone to iPhone - iBeam [paid app]

Posted by shriya On October - 9 - 2008

iBeam is a paid app but is FREE for a limited time in the AppStore as an introductory offer. iBeam lets you beam your contact information to another iPhone user in the same wi-fi network as you are.

Beaming isn’t anything new or groundbreaking but sorely missing in Apple’s iPhone. Now, you can do just that with iBeam.

Some things you can do with iBeam are:

  • Instantly beam contact information and photos directly iPhone to iPhone via wi-fi
  • Send the info to any device by email
  • Converts your info into a vcard and send it to any device via email
  • Option to turn off sharing certain contact information you want to keep private

I see iBeam being useful at certain instances. When I am at work sharing stuff with a colleague when we are on the same wi-fi. When a friend comes over to our place and on our wi-fi where we could exchange some pics easily.

I grabbed it as it was free but not sure if I would have bought it from AppStore. But, for someone who does this kind of stuff or have a lot of friends with iPhones, this could be an awesome app to have to share photos. What do you think?
