iPhone 3GS Video In the Wild

Posted by shriya On June - 16 - 2009

You have probably seen sneak peek of the new iPhone 3GS demo from Apple’s Guided Tour.

A YouTube video of the new iPhone 3GS has been found in the wild. The speaker demoing the iPhone 3GS is speaking Portuguese or Greek, I am not sure.

But, this video is great to just watch the various new features of the iPhone 3GS in action.

Animoto - Picture SlideShows on your iPhone

Posted by shriya On January - 8 - 2009

Animoto is out to put an end to boring slideshows.

Animoto

Animoto is a web application that turns your pictures into beautiful music videos. You can read our full Animoto review here. And it’s now available on iPhone.

Animoto iPhone app lets you select 8-16 photos from your picture library, select a music for the background and it creates a slideshow/video from your pics on the fly. You can watch it on your iPhone or email it to friends.

Here is one I quickly did from a few screenshots I had in my iPhone.

If you can’t already feel the excitement with the possibilities this app brings for you, let me help you visualize it. Lets say you are at a birthday party and you are snapping pics with your iPhone. You don’t have to wait to get home to create slideshows. Instead, you can create one while you are at the party and show/send it to everyone.

You can download the application here!

iTunes Music Becomes DRM Free

Posted by karthik On January - 6 - 2009

Today was the MacWorld 2009 Keynote day.

Phil Schiller handled the Keynote today as opposed to Steve Jobs who is going through a patch of bad health.

iTunes received a fair bit of attention today at the Keynote. But, not in terms of technology innovation like the announcement of the Genius feature last time.

iTunes music store is going completely DRM Free! itunes 8 plus

Here are a few more iTunes stats thrown around in the Keynote:

  • iTunes has sold 6 billion songs
  • iTunes holds over 10 million different tracks
  • There are now over 75 million accounts on iTunes with credit cards
  • Today, 8 million songs are DRM free and all 10 million will be by the end of March

You can now buy DRM free music from iTunes. You now get a ‘Create MP3 version’ when you right click on the song.

iTunes Plus

You can also get DRM Free upgrades to your existing iTunes collection through a iTunes Plus Apple Program that features songs with high quality 256 kbps AAC encoding.

Upgrading individual songs to DRM Free iTunes Plus tracks will set you back about 30 cents a song, 60 cents for a music video and $3 for most albums.

Also, iTunes Plus has now made it so that you can download songs from both WiFi or cellular network.

Other than this and the announcement of a 17″ Macbook Pro, there wasn’t much news on iPhone 3G or iPod Touch. So we were like meh!

You can get OrbLive’s Free version or the paid version for $9.99. The paid version will play any media from your PC - music/videos, photos, webcams, even live TV. The free version limits you to 3 randomly chosen titles of each type instead of giving control to choose.

Watch Live TV in iPhone over 3G

Posted by karthik On November - 10 - 2008

Orb Networks makes software for streaming media from our home computers to other devices including cellphones, Xbox, Wii, PS3, etc as well as other computers.

I used to use Orb to share some big videos that I didn’t want to wait hours uploading with a family member across the world and just stream it with Orb.

They had previously released a iPhone App - OrbLive for iPhone. It used to work only on WiFi/EDGE. Now, OrbLive for iPhone has been updated to a new version that allows live TV streams over WiFi as well as AT&T’s EDGE & 3G networks.

Well watching TV streams with Orb isn’t really straightforward but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist either to do it.

How to use Orb?

  • Install Orb software in your XP or Vista PC
  • If your PC has a TV tuner card, you can stream live TV
  • Get into Safari at mycast.orb.com to see your live stream

OrbLive for iPhone

  • iPhone App is available as a free and paid app ($9.99)
  • Free version just streams random files
  • Streams media over 3G + WiFi & EDGE
  • Paid version allows more control over what you watch

Download OrbLive

Will Apple Ban OrbLive?

Apple has in the past banned apps that stream live video from the AppStore. Qik is a great example that is so popular with jailbreak 2.1 iPhones but that isn’t still available in AppStore.

Even though OrbLive is accepted by Apple and available in AppStore I am going to wait to see if it was a mistake and let Apple pull it out.

But, with AT&T buying up a WiFi hotspot provider and boosting their current free WiFi offering to their iPhone & Blackberry customers, maybe it is time they feel ok with streaming live video on their 3G network. It is also about time to get the ability to record video on iPhone natively.

I guess we will find it out shortly, won’t we?

PS: Our recipe blog SpicyTasty is celebrating it’s 1st birthday with an awesome re-design. Hop over to congratulate and show some love. :-)

How Can I Record Video with my iPhone? [iPhone 101]

Posted by shriya On September - 27 - 2008

One of the major gripes about iPhone is the lack of video recording capabilities. But, that hasn’t stopped some brave souls from making that possible.

To get this cool functionality in your iPhone, you’d have to jailbreak your iPhone.

1. You can use one of our jailbreaking guides to jailbreak your iPhone

  1. How to Jailbreak iPhone 2.1 Firmware with QuickPwn
  2. How to jailbreak iPhone using Quickpwn GUI

2. Get a free jailbreak app like Cycorder from Cydia that lets you record videos with your iPhone camera.

3. Use jailbreak app like Qik to live stream your video so your friends or family can watch it on the web. if you are wondering what that is, even Ashton Kutcher is Qikking.

As you can see I was in the basement with no signal but was Qikking with wi-fi.

If you are wary of jailbreaking, it hasn’t ever been easier. Just check out the first guide which is the most recent one. It took me less than 20 minutes to jailbreak it. Also, if you are not so sure about jailbreaking here’s the lowdown.

It has opened up so many more possibilities like adding custom themes, Cydia apps that we can’t find in AppStore because Apple thinks it’s not good enough for us.

PhoneFlix - View & Manage Netflix on iPhone [Free App]

Posted by shriya On September - 25 - 2008

PhoneFlix is a free iPhone app that lets you view and manage your Netflix queue right from your iPhone or iPod Touch. Although PhoneFlix isn’t affiliated to Netflix in any way, it lets you login to your Netflix account and manage your queue. Plus, you can see your recent activity, recommendations and reviews as well.

You also get to browse through Netflix’s catalog of over 100,000 movies, documentaries and TV shows. I liked the fact that I could browse by movie categories, TV shows, Top 100 movies and pretty much all the top menu items in the Netflix website from my iPhone.

It looks like some folks have trouble logging into their Netflix account via PhoneFlix, but they are working to resolve it. Let us know it worked for you.

Just a quick note though, if after putting in your username and password, if it seems like you are still on the same screen, you probably typed in username or password wrong. It doesn’t give you an error.
