Fring Brings Skype Calls from iPhone & iPod Touch [free app]

Posted by shriya On October - 6 - 2008

Let’s hear what Fring is from the makers of Fring:

fring™ is a mobile internet service & community that enables you to access & interact with your social networks on-the-go, make free calls and live chat with all your fring, Skype®, MSN® Messenger, Google Talk™, ICQ, SIP, Twitter, Yahoo!™ and AIM®* friends using your handset’s internet connection.

Fring has now released a free iPhone App in Apple AppStore that lets you access & interact with contacts from multiple social networks in one contact list. Some of the Fring features are:

  • One searchable buddy list for all your social/IM networks
  • Supports Skype, MSN, Yahoo, GTalk, ICQ, AIM, Twitter, etc.
  • Simultaneously engage in multiple conversations via fring chat
  • Fring add-ons for Facebook, Orkut, Gmail Notifier, vTap, etc.
  • fring brings VOIP to iPod Touch and iPhone
  • fring is free

Skype hasn’t come out with a native iPhone App yet and we just talked about Skype for iPhone. But, Fring has made making Skype calls from iPhone and iPod Touch a reality now!

One downside to Fring on iPhone is that you can make Skype calls only on a WiFi connection. So even if you are on a nice fat 3G connection, the only way you can talk to your contacts is by text chat.

But, wait! When has that stopped our friendly hacking community. Looks like there is a cracked fring.ipa file out in the wild (link deleted in the fring forum) that lets you make Skype calls in 3G & Edge networks as well. I did however find a link to the cracked ipa file in iPhone download blog’s comments. I haven’t gotten a chane to try it yet but it seems simple enough to try it.

It goes something like this:

  • uninstall fring in iPhone/iPod Touch
  • drag and drop the cracked fring.ipa file into iTunes
  • Sync your iPhone to re-install fring
  • Make Skype calls in 3G/Edge connections

I’d love to hear what your experience is with this. Enjoy your Skype calls now.

Skype for iPhone Coming Soon?

Posted by shriya On September - 23 - 2008

I certainly hope so! And that’s what the director of Skype, Josh Silverman hinted at, in his GigaOM’s 19min interview .

When asked ‘Where is Skype for the iPhone’, he replied “Stay tuned. We need to be on all devices.. Skype needs to be everywhere”.

Skype is already available for Pocket PC based devices and is actually a big hit. When Skype hits iPhone, it will certainly be one of the popular app downloads for sure. Click over to GigaOM to watch the full video.

Skype for iPhone or iPod Touch Right Now?

For those who are impatient and can’t wait for Skype to release a native iPhone, you are in luck.

Shape Services is offering an iPhone & iPod Touch optimized web service that lets you use Skype from iPhone. The web page itself is iPhone app like icons. You can call any of the Skype users all over the world with it. Make cost effective calls to any phone number at SkypeOut rates. Chat with your online friends in Skype.

You have to pay a nominal fee for this service:

Monthly $5.95
Lifetime License $29.95

To get this simply type s4iphone.com in your iPhone and purchase a subscription. You get 10 days of fully functional trial period if you’d like to try it first.

I signed up for the free trial and tried calling this Skype account on iPhone from another Skype account. The webapp showed the incoming call and then it switched over like it was a normal call on the iPhone. The call quality was pretty good too but I was on my home Wi-Fi at the moment. I will report back when I get a chance to test this on 3G/Edge in the next 10 days.

I would love to hear your thoughts on it too.

We just got back from our vacation and hence the few silent days. Look out for a new post with pictures on How to jailbreak iPhone 2.1 firmware with Quickpwn for Windows. if you don’t want to miss such feeds, you can subscribe to our RSS feed.
