DevTeam Releases PwnageTool 2.2.5 to Jailbreak 2.2.1

jailbreak iPhone 2.2 I am definitely impressed at the speed with which DevTeam releases these updates after the firmware release.

If you are a Mac user or have access to a MacBook, read on as you can use PwnageTool 2.2.5.

If you are a Windows user and rely on QuickPwn to jailbreak/unlock your iPhone, we have to wait a little longer for QuickPwn 2.2.5. Do not update to 2.2.1 via iTunes or use the current Quickpwn version to jailbreak.

Things to Remember while Jailbreaking Firmware 2.2.1

Don’t let all these version numbers throw you off. Just read it over and over again until you understand and before starting with the jailbreak.

If you have a iPhone 3G running 2.2 firmware, only use the custom ipsw using PwnageTool 2.2.5 to update/jailbreak 2.2.1 firmware
Yellowsn0w - the iPhone unlock Cydia app will not work with firmware 2.2.1’s baseband (02.30.03). You have to use the custom 2.2.1 ipsw which doesn’t update the baseband.
Yellowsn0w has been upgraded to version 0.9.7 - so remember to use that from Cydia

iPhone firmware 2.2.1 has been released and you are probably here looking for Quickpwn or Pwnage to jailbreak 2.2.1 firmware. Dev Team hasn’t released an update yet for 2.2.1 and check this more up-to-date post here for current information on jailbreaking 2.2.1 firmware.

iPhone Dev Team has already come out with jailbreak software for iPhone firmware 2.2. Much faster than even the last time. In fact, last time Windows users had to wait a little for the QuickPwn but this time Dev Team released them all together.

Before you go downloading QuickPwn 2.2 or PwnageTool 2.2.1 and start jailbreaking, make sure you read this excellent post from Dev Team.

Quicpwn 2.2 and PwnageTool 2.2.1

iPhone 2G - Just update or restore to firmware 2.2 via iTunes and run QuickPwn.
iPod Touch 1G - Update to 2.2 with iTunes and run QuickPwn
iPod Touch 2G - no support at this time
Locked iPhone 3G - Read the Dev Team post before you jailbreak to understand. Basically, if you have hpes of soft unlocking your iPhone 3G, don’t use iTunes to update to 2.2 fimrware.
Locked iPhone 3G - If you have no intention of unlocking your iPhone in the future, then just update to 2.2 via iTunes and run QuickPwn.

Dev-Team Warns Against Updating to Firmware 2.2

The muct awaited iPhone firmware 2.2 is here. We can hardly contain our excitement and we’d love to update to firmware 2.2 as soon as we can. Probably so are you.

But, we love jailbreaking and our beloved iPhone Dev-Team warns against updating to firmware 2.2 yet. In fact, this is what they say exactly

If you want to keep that option of a ’soft-unlock in the near future’ available but you want the new features of 2.2, you will be able to update to 2.2 using a PwnageTool created custom ipsw file that disables the baseband update. You will be able to do this using an updated version of PwnageTool that will be released sometime soon.

A few reasons they cite against updating to 2.2

2.2 firmware for 3G contains baseband update for the 3G iPhone
PwnageTool & QuickPwn do not support his release yet, so don’t update to 2.2 via iTunes.
Your iPhone could become deactivated and unusable if you had previously relied on PwnageTool or QuickPwn to activate and if you now applied this update.
Non AppStore apps will stop working
2G (ist gen) iPhone users can theoratically be able to update to 2.2 via iTunes and preserve existing activation. But, if you restore to 2.2 iTunes, your iPhone will go to unactivated state. If in doubt, hold off for the updated PwnageTool or QuickPwn.

Pwnage Tool 2.0.2 & WinPwn 2.0.0.4 Released

We all know that Apple had just released iPhone firmware 2.0.1. The iPhone Dev Team has been busy and they have released Pwnage Tool 2.0.2 which jailbreaks the new firmware loaded iPhones as well.
