SlingPlayer fans can rejoice now. The SlingPlayer iPhone app when it came out was crippled by AT&T.
The SlingPlayer iPhone app ($29.99) so far could only work on WiFi and not on 3G data connection. AT&T has finally removed this restriction and you could stream your Sling Media to your iPhone over 3G network connection.
In fact, AT&T and Sling Media have worked together to optimize the Sling Player app to conserve bandwidth when using AT&T’s 3G network.
For those unaware, Sling Media Slingbox PRO-HD lets you watch all of your TV anywhere by streaming it. You can watch your HDTV channels anywhere on your laptop or mobile phone or other devices (possibly iPad?). On your iPhone, SlingPlayer Mobile iPhone app gives you an oncreen menu to view all your channels from your home TV.
So, if you have wanted to watch live TV over 3G, this could be a great option.
Update: It seems Sling Media came out and said they never discussed specific requirements with AT&T about the iPhone app while AT&T said otherwise. Did AT&T misstated the truth about working with Sling?
There is also another angle here. AT&T is a behmoth and might have been looking at this app for a while and of course Sling Player has been improved in between that time although there weren’t any specifics. The jury is still out on this one. What do you think?
